German and Italian Templars and POWs

The beginning of the Germans' connection to the Land of Israel was in 1868, when they arrived in Israel from the Templar community ...

These colonies were an absorption base for those who came in the next wave.  In 1873, a German neighborhood was established in Emek Refaim in Jerusalem, which is the German colony. The Germans in the country, who championed farming, established the first Templar colony, Sharona. Wilhelma was later founded near the city of Lod Waldheim. A colony was also established near Ramla (Spohn ranch) and other places in the country.

At that time the Templars had at their disposal about forty-three thousand dunams.

The Templars saw their colonies in the land as German territory in the Middle East, and persisted in this devoutly in all periods.  They were loyal to Germany as early as the days of Emperor Wilhelm II, took great care of their national uniqueness, and never allowed intermarriage. Many spy agents found in the German settlement in Eretz Israel an important stopover and a source of information of special value, since the residents were well involved in life in Eretz Israel.

It should be noted that this loyalty was not to the liking of the government both during the Turkish period and during the Mandate period.

Until the rise of Hitler there was no hostility towards the Jews and towards their settlement enterprise on the part of the Templars. Their attitude towards the British was also seemingly normal.

In 1933 the nationalist feelings of the Templars soared, and many of them openly identified with Nazi ideology. In March 1933, the first two branches of the Nazi Party were established in Sharona and Jaffa.  In the summer of 1933, the number of members of the Nazi party in the country rose to forty-two. The rate of accession increased, and the Nazis began to operate among the Arabs as well.

In May 1934, the Jerusalem police learned that extremist Arab nationalists intended to form the Palestinian Nazi Party, which aimed to fight Jews in coordination with the Nazi Party in Germany.  In Israel, many swastikas began to appear on Arab homes and their cars. At the end of 1935 the number of members of the Nazi party in Israel was two hundred and eighty.'

הטמפלרים ושבויי מלחמה גרמנים ואיטלקים

תחילת הקשר של הגרמנים לארץ ישראל בשנת 1868, כשהגיעו ארצה מן העדה הטמפלרית...

המושבות האלה היו בסיס קליטה לאלה שבאו בגל הבא. בשנת 1873 הוקמה שכונה גרמנית בעמק רפאים בירושלים, היא המושבה הגרמנית. הגרמנים בארץ, אשר דגלו בעבודת אדמה, הקימו את המושבה הטמפלרית הראשונה שרונה. אחריה נוסדו וילהלמה ליד העיר לוד וולדהיים. כמו כן הוקמה מושבה ליד רמלה (חוות שפון) ובמקומות נוספים בארץ. 

באותה תקופה עמדו לרשות הגרמנים הטמפלרים כארבעים ושלושה אלף דונם. 

הטמפלרים ראו במושבותיהם בארץ שטח גרמני במזרח התיכון, והתמידו בכך באדיקות בכל התקופות. הם היו נאמנים לגרמניה כבר בימי הקיסר וילהלם השני, הקפידו מאוד על ייחודם הלאומי, ומעולם לא התירו נישואי תערובת . סוכני ריגול רבים מצאו ביישוב הגרמני בארץ ישראל תחנת ביניים חשובה ומקור מידע בעל ערך מיוחד , שכן התושבים היו מעורים היטב בחיים בארץ ישראל.

יש לציין כי נאמנות זו לא הייתה לרוחו של השלטון הן בתקופה הטורקית והן בתקופת המנדט. 

עד עלייתו של היטלר לא הורגשה איבה כלפי היהודים וכלפי מפעל ההתיישבות שלהם מצד הטמפלרים. יחסם אל הבריטים אף הוא היה לכאורה תקין.

בשנת 1933 גאו רגשותיהם הלאומניים של הטמפלרים, ורבים מהם הזדהו בגלוי עם האידאולוגיה הנאצית. במרס 1933 הוקמו שני הסניפים הראשונים של המפלגה הנאצית בשרונה וביפו. בקיץ 1933 עלה מספר חברי המפלגה הנאצית בארץ לארבעים ושנים. קצב ההצטרפות גדל, והנאצים החלו לפעול גם בקרב הערבים.

במאי 1934 נודע למשטרת ירושלים כי לאומנים ערבים קיצוניים מתכוונים להקים את המפלגה הנאצית הפלסטינית, שמטרתה להילחם ביהודים בתיאום עם המפלגה הנאצית בגרמניה. בארץ החלו להיראות צלבי קרס רבים על בתי ערבים ועל מכוניותיהם. בסוף שנת 1935 היה מספר חברי המפלגה הנאצית בארץ ישראל מאתיים שמונים.
